Winged Victory

Gilbert Doble’s (1880-1945) Winged Victory is a sculpture of Nike, the goddess of victory. It was created for the top of the Marrickville Soldiers’ Memorial in 1919 in honour of local soldiers.

Digitisation of National Herbarium of NSW

ICS provided staff for the National Herbarium of NSWs’ project to digitise its collection of 1.4 million preserved plant specimens. Some dating back to Captain Cook’s landings in Australia in 1770.

Rouse Hill Estate Side Chair

This high Victorian style upholstered dining chair is from the collection of the Rouse Hill Estate. The NSW homestead, in the Australian Georgian style, was developed between 1813 and 1819 with further developments in c. 1863.

Birdwood Flag

The restored Birdwood Flag served as the Australian ensign and the first recorded Australian flag in the field of war from WW1. The flag had been hanging proudly in a Newcastle cathedral since 1924.

State Theatre Conservation of Butterfly Room

The Butterfly Room is one of the highly decorated rooms at the State theatre. ICS was engaged to uncover the original Butterfly Room decorations and return the whole room to its original intended appearance.

King William III Delft Plate

Dating back to 1691, this rare tin-glazed earthenware ceramic plate was made to commemorate King William III who ruled England, Scotland and Ireland with his wife Queen Mary II from 1689-1702. It features a portrait of the king, flanked by his initials ‘KW’ and surrounded by a floral border. The plate has a lobed-style edge and is decorated with blue, yellow and green on a white background – common with Delftware from this period.

Matthew Flinders Statue

Matthew Flinders (1774-1814) was one of the most talented navigators and chart-makers of his day. A captain in the Royal Navy, in 1798 he sailed from Sydney and circumnavigated Van Diemens Land (Tasmania), proving that it was an island. From 1801 to 1803 he circumnavigated mainland Australia, charting the coastline as he went. In 1925 a statue was erected in his honour outside the State Library of NSW in Sydney.
