Museum and conservation planning is a critical process that aims to preserve and protect cultural heritage for future generations. Our team is experienced in advising on and implementing all aspects of a collection's needs.

Our team assesses your collection, defining the mission, scope, and objectives of the institution, as well as understanding the community it serves. We gain an understanding of the collection site including its storage and display areas and the ongoing storage and conservation needs of the collection.

These initial assessments help form the recommendations for your collection's needs. This can include advice on layout, equipment needs, storage, furniture, environmental conditions and logistics for handling your artefacts or artworks. We also advise on ongoing conservation needs including preventative measures such as regular cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of artefacts and their display cases to prevent deterioration.

Benefits of museum and conservation planning include:

Improved collection management: Planning helps organise and manage collections efficiently, ensuring that objects are properly documented, stored, and maintained.

Strategic direction: It provides a clear mission, vision, and strategic goals for the institution, guiding decision-making and resource allocation.

Enhanced conservation planning: Conservation planning identifies items in need of restoration, establishing priorities and ensuring proper care and maintenance.

Efficient resource allocation: Effective planning optimises the use of available resources, reducing waste and mismanagement.

Emergency preparedness: Planning helps institutions prepare for emergencies and disasters, reducing the risk of damage to collections.

Legacy and sustainability: Effective planning contributes to the long-term legacy and sustainability of cultural institutions, ensuring they continue to thrive and contribute to society.

Collections are usually collated under a Collection Management System (CMS). We would assess your current collection documentation and determine which of the CMS on offer, either cloud based or dedicated PC options, would best suit your needs. We then help in the process of data migration, often cleaning up the data in the process.

We work with a range of CMS providers and are happy to give advice on the process of choosing the system best suited to your needs. Once you've invested in your new CMS we can assist with the migration process itself.

To give advice on organisation and storage we need to physically assess your collection. All advice offered takes into account optimal temperature needs, relative humidity, light, pest activity, water ingress and protection from mould. We also offer collection monitoring where we are able to give advice and direction based off the current conditions of your collections housing.

Our experts tailor their planning towards your collection, providing guidance and recommendations based on the types of objects held within your collection. Once we know what your collection entails we provide guidance on museum layout, necessary equipment, storage solutions, furniture, environment conditions and logistics for handling the artefacts or artworks.
