Condition

A site inspection by ICS conservators found the memorial dirty and discoloured by atmospheric pollution and biological growth. The stone joints had opened and some of the pointing was missing. The bronze elements were dirty, and there areas of corrosion and depleted wax coatings.

Treatment

Stone

The stone elements were high pressure steam cleaned to remove ingrained dirt and biological growth. The joints were patch repointed with a lime-based mortar. The stone surface was treated with a biocide.

Bronze

The bronze elements were pressure cleaned to remove surface dirt and grime. Areas of corrosion were manually removed, using hand tools, and a corrosion inhibiter the applied to prevent any further corrosion occurring. The metal was then treated with hot wax, left to cool, and then buffed to a high sheen finish.

Testimonial

I am extremely happy with the result, looks great; a top job by all involved. Please pass on my gratitude to those who were on the job. I was impressed that all three of them had smiles on their faces while they were working.
