Condition
Although in relatively good condition, constant exposure to the elements meant that the protective wax coating on each statue was deteriorating, and there was a build-up of bird droppings and other dirt/debris.
Treatment
- Washing statue and stone plinth using controlled high-pressure hose
- Mechanically removing activecorrosion using timber skewers andscalpel blades
- Applying wax with a softbrush to slow any corrosion andminimise further degradation
- Filling casting flaws andprevious repairs to improve water resistance
- Buffing entire figure withstiff bristled nylon brushes
- Cleaning and waxingall plaques and the cat statue, then buffing using stiff bristled nylon brushes
