Condition
As an outdoor monument regularly exposed to the elements, a range of issues needed to be addressed. These included corrosion of the bronze sculptures, deterioration of their protective wax coating, and a build-up of bird droppings, cobwebs, dirt and debris. Special precautions needed to be implemented to gain safe access to the memorial, as it is located on a traffic island in the middle of Shakespeare Place.
Treatment
- Cleaning bronze
- Removing old wax and applied localised corrosion treatments
- Applying protective coating
- Cleaning marble elements and reducing staining
- Repointing stone base
- Repairing deteriorated and missing sealant joints
Condition (2020 assessment)
The protective wax coating ICS applied in 2017 had begun deteriorating in localised areas. Dust and grime had built up again on the surfaces, concentrating in the same areas where water pools. There was evidence of chloride corrosion in cracks and crevices.
