WSU Art Collection

Overview

ICS embarked on a significant two-phase project with Western Sydney University in 2022.

The first phase involved the stocktake and preparation of 664 artworks at the Werrington store for relocation.

The second phase comprised a comprehensive review of the university's art collection to assess the current use, storage conditions, exhibition spaces, and also the Indigenous artworks in the collection.

The artwork stocktake and relocation preparation required careful handling of each piece.  ICS staff were then able to migrate existing artwork data from Trim to Recollect, ensuring data integrity, before packing for transport.

In the art collection review phase, ICS staff delved into the university's collection, identifying its predominant use as artwork hung in corridors and offices.  Storage conditions were evaluated, with urgent improvements highlighted.

ICS also analysed the exhibition areas, Indigenous artworks, and existing documentation on TRIM.

The insights and findings led to key recommendations, providing Western Sydney University with a strategic roadmap for sustainable access, conservation, storage, digitisation, Indigenous cultural protocols, and collection repositioning.
