Condition
The sculpture was in good condition overall, with the following issues noted:
- Light to medium scratching of the surface, especially where people lean into and climb on the sculpture at the central hole
- Small areas of surface corrosion
- Smudges, spotting, and other marks from people touching the surface of the sculpture and concrete plinth
- Film of grime from local marine and city environment
- Litter inside the sculpture
Treatment
- 2Access hatches were removed to allow for rubbis hremoval and cleaning of the interior
- The exterior of the sculpture was cleaned to remove marks, grime, and environmental film
- The edges of most of the larger holes and manyof the smaller holes were cleaned to remove original steel polish residue, grime, and environmental build up
- Tea-staining/corrosion on the exterior surface was reduced or removed, then buffed with microfibre cloths
- Corrosion on the interior surface of some of the small holes was removed using cotton swabs to avoid damaging the mirror polished surface
- The plinth was cleaned with water, sponge, and microfibre cloths to reduce soiling
Treatment outcomes
The statue looked refreshed and ready for another year of public display and handling.
