CSIRO National Collections Relocation Planning

Overview

ICS was commissioned by the CSIRO in 2020 to develop a plan and costings for collection relocation activities to support relocation of the collections.

A new dedicated state-of-the-art National Research Collections Australia facility will house their spirit collections, insect (pinned and slide) collections and wildlife collections.

15 million specimens including eggs, skins, mounts, and pinned insects need to be carefully supported and prepared before transportation to the new facility.  The ICS plan has ensured that resources and staffing were made available to undertake necessary preparatory works.

In mid 2023 ICS was again engaged, this time to review progress against the original plan to ensure the collections are ready to be moved into the new facility during 2024.

Project Activities

ICS commenced the project with careful planning and workshops, focusing on developing an achievable plan to ensure the collections were prepared in time for the new facility.

The new facility is designed to be pesticide-free, meaning that Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and treatment of the collections as a part of the relocation is essential.  ICS has provided advice about planning for pest treatment using freezing and low oxygen treatment as a part of the relocation process.

Key activities undertaken included:

  • Consultation and analysis with stakeholders to understand the specific needs and requirements for the relocation.
  • Advice on preparation for relocation of fragile specimens, including pinned insects, eggs, spirit collections.
  • Developing a detailed relocation plan, including resource planning, costings and staging of activities:
    • Collection preparation activities
    • Collection relocation activities
    • Collection decanting activities
  • Advice on new storage drawers and cabinets
  • Advice on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) procedures to implement during the move
  • Identifying potential risks and providing mitigation strategies to ensure the safe and secure transfer of specimens.
  • Coordination and oversight during the relocation process to ensure the smooth transition of collections, equipment, and staff.

Project Outcome

The detailed planning by ICS in close consultation with the CSIRO, and the roll-out of resourcing and processes as recommended by ICS, has resulted in the collections being well prepared for the relocation in 2024.
