Condition
The statues were in poor condition with major structural issues.
The concrete bases were in good condition with minimal signs of cracking, but localised corrosion stains were present on some surfaces.
For the lead statuary, it was noted that lead corrosion was present over the entirety of the sculpture, with paint residues in the crevasses. Dirt, grime and pest activity was present on all surfaces, along with cracking at the load bearing points, and deep scratches and deformations consistent with the sculptures having fallen. Past repairs included a lead bandage one arm, an epoxy repair to another arm, and a concrete fill in one of the legs.
Treatment
ICS conservators undertook the following highly successful treatment:
- Removal of the concrete bases to gain better access to the internal armature through the feet
- Replacement of corroding armature with a more suitable and corrosion resistant armature
- Reduction of large deformations by reshaping the sculpture where possible.
- Fabrication of a lead patch to replace the concrete fill on the leg
- Installation of a new stainless steel armature
- Reinstallation of cut-out sections and previously repaired sections by lead burning (a traditional lead welding technique)
- Patination as approved by the client.
Outcome
Our client was delighted with the transformation!
