Overview

ICS was commissioned by the National Seed Bank Australia to support the relocation of the Australian National Seed Bank collection.

It was relocated to a new purpose-built facility in the Australian Botanic Gardens, Black Mountain, Canberra. The project aimed to enhance the Seed Bank's capabilities, streamline operations, and contribute to overall growth and development.

Project activities

ICS commenced the project with careful planning, focusing on minimizing disruption to the ongoing activities of the Seed Bank.

Key activities undertaken included:

  • Consultation and analysis with stakeholders to understand the specific needs and requirements for the relocation.
  • Advice on preparation for cryo-storage.
  • Developing a detailed relocation plan, including re-arranging freezer collections, upgrading storage containers, and standardising labelling systems.
  • Identifying potential risks and providing mitigation strategies to ensure the safe and secure transfer of specimens.
  • Coordination and oversight during the relocation process to ensure the smooth transition of collections, equipment, and staff.
  • Conducting a post-relocation review to assess outcomes and provide support for any further adjustments or improvements.

Project outcome

The collaboration with ICS has prepared the National Seed Bank for a successful relocation of the collection in 2024, in line with good collection management practices and accommodating new storage and processing techniques.
