Bruce Lee Statue

Overview

ICS was engaged by the Georges River Council to inspect and undertake conservation works to the Bruce Lee bronze sculpture in Kogarah Town Square, Sydney.

The sculpture is a larger-than-life bronze statue of the Chinese American actor and martial arts star Bruce Lee, standing on a stone plinth.

The statue was unveiled in 2011 by Kogarah Council to mark the first anniversary of its Friendship City Agreement with the District of Shunde, in Foshan City, China.

  • Overall surface dirt and grime
  • Variations in consistency with the bronze casting
  • Visible manufacturing joints
  • Various casting flaws which have been plugged with epoxy that has failed
  • Green corrosion and white/yellow crystalline deposits located around casting flaws
  • Bronze/gold spray had been applied to localised areas
  • Evidence of internal armature corroding
  • Yellow and pale blue salts accumulating at the feet
  • Iron staining on stone plinth

Treatment

  • Salts testing
  • Hand cleaning to remove dirt and debris
  • Loose corrosion products were removed by hand
  • Application of a corrosion inhibitor to localised areas
  • The entire surface was heated using a propane torch to remove surface moisture
  • Two coats of pigmented wax were applied
  • The surface was buffed to compact and add sheen to the wax coatings
