The Paintings Conservator is responsible for a wide range of conservation projects including acrylic, oil and tempura paintings on a variety of surfaces, eg. canvas, board and wall. Frames conservation and gilding may also be undertaken.
We have an opening for a Paintings Conservator to join ICS Melbourne, starting in February 2025. Based at our Burwood labs you will have the opportunity to undertake hands-on conservation treatments combined with project management of a wide variety lab-based projects. Some site work will also feature. Salary will be commensurate with experience and level of appointment in the range of $73,584 – $79,824 plus 12% superannuation. This full-time position is available in February 2025.
International Conservation Services (ICS) is Australia’s largest private conservation practice. We conserve a wide range of cultural and heritage objects and artefacts including paintings, furniture, textiles, paper, sculpture, archaeological artefacts and wall finishes in buildings.
The role
The work covers a wide variety of conservation treatments on all types of paintings and painted surfaces including oil paintings, acrylic paintings, tempera, old masters, murals, painted signs, miniatures, icons and frames. Treatments may range from from maintenance cleaning, infilling and inpainting, through to executing complex treatments.
Day to day activities include developing conservation methodologies in collaboration with team members, quoting and undertaking all technical aspects of conservation. Other responsibilities may include project planning and implementation, job budget management, time management, subcontractor liaison, disaster response, writing project reports, supporting and guiding other team members.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Minimum 3 years work experience in paintings conservation
- Excellent hands-on technical skills for a variety of conservation jobs
- Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal
- Ability to make positive contributions in a team environment and also work independently
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Sound working knowledge of, and commitment to, Occupational Health and Safety practices in the workplace
- Commitment to providing excellent client service
- Membership of the AICCM (Australian Institute for Conservation of Cultural Material) or equivalent other professional organisation, or eligibility to apply for membership
- Proficient computer skills including MS Office and basic photo applications
- Drivers Licence (essential)
