Matteo is trained in the conservation of easel paintings, wooden panel paintings and polychrome sculptures. He joined the ICS paintings conservation department in 2007 and was appointed Principal Conservator (Paintings) in 2020.

Matteo attained a Diploma of Fine Arts and a Master of Painting Conservation at Accademia di Belle Arti, Aldo Galli in Como, Italy, where he trained in the conservation of a broad range of painted surfaces. He is skilled in the conservation of decorative painting on wood, such as wooden ceiling, and has worked on many such projects while at ICS. Of notable interest is the work completed on Bong Bong Church in the Southern Highlands and maintenance at the Lowy Institute Building in Sydney.

Matteo has experience in the conservation of murals, gained largely through conserving frescos in Italy. Whilst in Australia, he has acquired an understanding of the conservation needs of bark paintings and other Aboriginal painted artworks. In addition, he is skilled in the area of gilt frame conservation, and readily applies his vast knowledge to projects, including painted metal artworks, ceramics, stone, marble and scagliola.
