Overview

ICS was engaged by St Agnes’ Catholic Church to undertake conservation treatment on the 14 Stations of the Cross and two sculptures of Mary and Jesus located inside St Agnes’ Catholic Church in Port Macquarie.

Each Station is modelled in relief from plaster and painted. The works are mounted on small rectangular plinths and attached to the wall behind.

Condition

  • Surface dust, dirt and grime
  • Minor paint losses and flaking paint
  • Previous repairs of damaged elements (fingers, toes, hands) have been undertaken somewhat crudely
  • Surface cracks present in the backgrounds of Stations 3, 8 and 10
  • Previous paint retouching is visibly different to the original colour

Treatment

  • Dry surface clean with chemical sponge and vacuum
  • Aqueous clean with PH adjusted water
  • Consolidation of flaking paint
  • Removal of the previous poorly remodelled repairs
  • Remodelling of the missing parts, and remodelling parts to replace the previous poor repairs
  • Attaching newly remodelled pieces
  • Inpainting of paint losses
