Dip Cons, (Cons), MA

Matteo grew up in Italy surrounded by historic environments and landscapes, and developed a passionate interest and desire to preserve cultural heritage for future generations. He brings his enthusiasm, skills and expertise to the paintings conservation team of ICS, which he joined in 2007. He was appointed as Senior Paintings Conservator in 2012, and Principal Conservator in 2020.

Matteo attained a Diploma of Fine Arts and a Master of Painting Conservation at Accademia di Belle Arti, Aldo Galli in Como, Italy, where he trained in the conservation of a broad range of painted surfaces. He is skilled in the conservation of decorative painting on wood, such as wooden ceilings, and has worked on many such projects while at ICS. Of notable interest is the work completed on Bong Bong Church in the Southern Highlands and maintenance at the Lowy Institute Building in Sydney.

Matteo is also trained in the conservation of gilt surfaces including frames and polychrome sculptures. He readily applies his considerable knowledge to a range of projects, including painted metal artworks, ceramics, stone, marble and scagliola.

Since joining ICS, Matteo has continued to develop his analytical skills and continues to enrich his knowledge by participating in conferences and workshops such as New Methods of Cleaning Painted Surfaces held at Museums Victoria in 2018, and a Modern Resin for Varnishes and Retouching Workshop held at SRAL Maastricht in the Netherlands in 2016.

Matteo is a professional member of the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material (AICCM).
