Doug initially developed his interest in Museum Collection Management while working as a Botanist at Auckland Museum. He has over 12 years of experience working for major museums, including with the natural history collections at Auckland Museum, and as a Collection Manager for Canterbury Museum. Doug has proven experience in collections handling and relocation, developing museum exhibitions and displays, and in managing and running security for museum environments.

In his current role as Head of Museum and Gallery Services, Doug leads the ICS Collection Management and Technology departments. He develops and maintains relationships with the larger Museum and Gallery community in Australia and New Zealand. Doug specialises in all areas of collection management and collection security, especially in the application of new and emerging technologies. He has extensive IT management experience, with expertise in the application of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for the security and management of cultural collections.

During his time with ICS, Doug has managed and undertaken a wide range of conservation projects, particularly in public and outdoor art. Some project highlights include: Relocation of the Australia Council collection, ongoing conservation works to outdoor sculptures at Parliament House, installation of the Fortecho art security system at the NMA and NGA, implementation of the Smarttrack Locafi solution at Parliament House, Canberra, and conservation treatment at Old Parliament House of windows and a coat of arms façade.

He is a current member of both the AICCM and Australasian Registrars Committee (ARC).
