The beautiful decorative interior of the crypt in the 1820s church of St James in Sydney was completed in the 1930s by a group of artists known as the Turramurra school which included Roy de Maistre and Grace Cossington Smith.

By the 1990s salt damage had caused extensive deterioration and ICS were commissioned to skin the paint off the surface and reapply it to a new fibreglass shell. This highly complex conservation procedure was undertaken with complete success and the Children’s Chapel remains one of the jewels in the church.

Treatment

  • Removal of mural from walls and ceiling
  • Lining of mural with fibreglass support
  • Inpainting losses
  • Reapplication of fibreglass panels with mural to crypt walls and ceiling
