We are seeking a skilled Furniture Conservator to join our Furniture Team in Chatswood, Sydney in a full-time (possibly part-time) role.  Use your hands-on conservation and project skills to treat a wide variety of furniture, and wooden objects and artworks.  Salary commensurate with experience in the range of $64,392 - $80,640 plus 10% superannuation.  This full-time position is available in January 2022.

International Conservation Services (ICS) is Australia’s largest private conservation practice.  We conserve a wide range of cultural and heritage objects and artefacts including paintings, furniture, textiles, paper, sculpture, archaeological artefacts and wall finishes in buildings.


This role requires a combination of hands-on conservation skills and the ability to manage multiple projects to meet client deadlines.  It may suit applicants with transferable skills in furniture restoration with a strong conservation focus.

Day to day activities include developing conservation treatment methodologies in collaboration with team members, quoting, and undertaking all technical aspects of conservation.  Other responsibilities may include project planning, job budget management, time management, subcontractor liaison, disaster response, and supporting or guiding other team members.


Conservation is carried out on a wide variety of antiques, wooden objects and furniture, ranging from Australian colonial furniture and antique European furniture through to ethnographic items and contemporary pieces.  The work includes structural repairs, carving/replication of missing elements, veneer work (including marquetry), boulle work, gilding, leather conservation and re-laying of leather desktops, replication/manufacture of brass fitments, lock repair and re-keying, pietra dura and timber finishes in buildings.

Our ideal candidate will have:

• Hands-on skills as an Furniture Conservator

• At least 3 years experience as an Furniture Conservator after graduation with a relevant degree (additional work experience in a relevant profession will be highly regarded)

• Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal

• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team

• Ability to work independently, set priorities, and manage time effectively

• Initiative, willingness and ability to learn from others

• Outcomes-focused, with a level-headed approach, helpful attitude and excellent work ethic

• Ability to foster good client relationships

• Sound knowledge of and commitment to Work Health & Safety practices

• Membership of an appropriate professional organisation, or eligibility to apply for membership.

• Australian citizenship or residency is preferred; ICS may consider visa sponsorship of an appropriately qualified international applicant.

• Drivers licence (or eligible)
